Clinical Scenario 1 - Orbital Trauma/Inflammation - Introduction Video

0:01

For clinical scenario one,

0:03

I've combined some of the indications for orbital imaging

0:07

into one. They include orbital trauma and orbital inflammation.

0:12

For orbital trauma,

0:14

a lot of times it's a question of orbital wall fracture,

0:18

but we also look for foreign bodies

0:20

in orbital trauma. We look for a blind eye.

0:24

We look for an open globe where there's communication

0:27

into the external surface with the globe,

0:30

and that's usually the anterior compartment of the orbit.

0:34

For orbital inflammation, we're usually talking about a hot,

0:37

painful eye with a differential diagnosis,

0:41

including periorbital and orbital cellulitis

0:44

as well as pseudotumor.

0:46

You may also see the scenario with new onset ptosis.

0:51

Here's another trauma indication as eye swelling after an

0:55

altercation, usually a fist fight with injury to the orbit.

0:59

And we've already dealt with orbital cellulitis.

1:02

So these are the typical clinical indications that you

1:05

will see on the request for orbital evaluation.

1:10

And for the most part, these are done without contrast.

1:13

Obviously, in those situations where we have inflammation,

1:16

we may do this study both with and without contrast.
