Course Description

Join Dr. Mikhail Higgins (BU School of Medicine – Boston Medical Center) in this intro to image-guided biopsies, which includes pearls/pitfalls of procedures, techniques, and complications in this setting. 

Learn the pros and cons of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and core needle biopsy, including consideration of the various needle shapes and how they impact the biopsy in question. Gain an understanding of important patient, lesional, and procedural factors that raise the risk of infection or bleeding, and mitigation techniques we can use to lower the risk of bleeding. 

This course will prepare you to confidently understand different techniques, equipment, and preparation for image-guided biopsies through overviews of:

  • Biopsy types and routes (superficial, surgical, and image-guided)
  • Types of image-guided biopsy (focal, non-focal, and fluid sampling)
  • Advantages and disadvantages of using CT, Ultrasound, and Fluoroscopy in image-guided biopsies 
  • Tissue sampling techniques
