Case: Sarcoma of the Levator Scapulae

HIDE
PrevNext

0:01

We are continuing to evaluate patients

0:03

who have neck masses without fever.

0:07

This was a patient who noticed the progressive

0:09

enlargement of a mass in the lower right neck.

0:14

On the CT scan,

0:15

you see this irregular mass that has sort of a

0:18

speculated appearance to it with regard

0:21

to the contrast enhancement.

0:23

This is the sternocleidomastoid muscle.

0:25

This is the posterior musculature.

0:27

Got a little bit of the latissimus dorsi musculature.

0:31

This is actually in the levator scapulae muscle,

0:34

and this proved to be a sarcoma.

0:37

So unusual diagnosis in the neck.

0:40

However, if it's not a lymph node and

0:43

it's infiltrating the muscle,

0:44

one of the things to be considered is a sarcoma.

0:47

You can get lymphomas that are also muscular in their

0:51

etiology. Because of the absence of adjacent

0:55

streaking in the fat or overlying cellulitis,

1:00

the absence of that suggested that this

1:02

is not an inflammatory process,

1:04

but indeed was a sarcoma of the

1:08

levator scapulae muscle.
