Introduction to Neurodegenerative Diseases

Welcome to MRI Online's session

0:03

on neurodegenerative disease.

0:06

Neurodegenerative disease encompasses a very broad

0:09

range of abnormalities. From toxicities, all the way

0:13

up to heredofamilial and genetic abnormalities.

0:17

But neurodegenerative diseases affect

0:19

millions of people worldwide.

0:22

Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are

0:25

the most common types of what I call non-toxicity

0:29

related neurodegenerative disorders.

0:31

With more than 5 million Americans living with

0:33

Alzheimer's disease and at least 500,000 Americans

0:37

living with Parkinson's disease.

0:39

That's a million and a half people.

0:41

Now, if you lump into this category of primary

0:45

neurodegenerative disorders,

0:47

two other main players, namely Lewy body dementia,

0:50

LBD and Frontotemporal dementia,

0:53

previously called Pick's disease,

0:55

you've got the bulwark of major

0:58

neurodegenerative disorders.

1:00

Population-wide health improvements

1:02

have increased our lifespans.

1:04

So people that might not have gotten

1:06

neurodegenerative diseases, because they might have

1:08

died at age 60 or 70, are now getting

1:11

them at age 75, 80, 85, and 90.

1:14

So a larger generation of aging Americans are

1:18

presenting with neurodegenerative disorders,

1:20

which means that the imaging for these disorders

1:23

is expanding, not contracting.

1:25

So it means more people are going to be affected

1:28

in the coming decades and more imaging,

1:30

especially with MRI, is going to be done.

1:32

So why is it so important to image these diseases?

1:36

Because some of them have no treatment,

1:38

but then again, some of them do.

1:40

So the obvious answer is some are treatable.

1:44

Genetics is a very important reason.

1:46

Understanding what the risk factors are for parents

1:49

and progeny.

1:51

Prognosis.

1:52

What's the lifespan of the patient?

1:54

Treatment.

1:55

For instance,

1:56

Parkinson's disease is treatable

1:58

with derivatives of Sinemet,

2:01

while Parkinson-related disorders or

2:04

pseudo Parkinson's disease often doesn't respond

2:08

to Sinemet-type or dopaminergic preparations.

2:11

Mimickers of neurodegenerative diseases,

2:15

such as toxicity. You know, heroin,

2:17

chronic heroin abuse can mimic a neurodegenerative

2:21

disorder or dementia.

2:23

Reversible disorders.

2:25

NPH, normal pressure hydrocephalus,

2:27

which might be treated with a shunt in a

2:30

specialized setting. And finally,

2:32

research so that we gain a greater understanding

2:35

of these neurodegenerative diseases.

2:37

Let's move on, shall we?
