Summary: Multimodal Imaging of Normal Pregnancy

HIDE
PrevNext

0:00

So as we've seen, we can use multiple

0:02

imaging modalities to evaluate pregnancy.

0:06

Ultrasound is the first-line imaging modality

0:09

for evaluation of the fetus, the uterus,

0:11

and the ovaries in all three trimesters.

0:14

But we can use CT and MRI, particularly

0:17

in the context of trauma or

0:19

troubleshooting as clinically indicated.

0:22

A lot of patients will get imaged

0:24

in the first trimester, primarily

0:26

for evaluation of fetal viability.

0:29

And when we're doing a first trimester

0:31

ultrasound, it's important to identify

0:34

the gestational sac, the embryo, embryonic

0:37

cardiac activity, and the yolk sac.

0:39

We also want to evaluate the internal cervical

0:42

os to make sure that the cervix is closed

0:45

and evaluate for subchorionic hematoma.

0:48

In the second and third trimester,

0:50

it becomes increasingly important to

0:52

assess the amniotic fluid volume and the

0:54

location and morphology of the placenta,

0:57

particularly in cases of multiple gestations.
