Clinical Scenario 3: Sore Throat Pain and Fever Introduction

HIDE
PrevNext

0:01

Well, let's move it along to the next clinical scenario that you will

0:04

likely find in the emergency department

0:07

with a referral to neuroimaging.

0:09

And this is in the head and neck range

0:11

and that is throat pain and fever.

0:14

Clearly what the clinicians are generally talking about is the

0:18

possibility of a peritonsillar abscess with throat pain,

0:22

pharyngitis and fever.

0:24

And this is usually seen in the pediatric population,

0:28

not so much in the adult population.

0:30

The other scenario that we would look at the same clinical

0:34

evaluation is for difficulty swallowing with fever,

0:38

difficulty breathing or airway compromise with fever.

0:42

Rule out peritonsillar abscess or dental abscess,

0:47

status post extraction.

0:48

So these are the ones in which we would be ordering and

0:52

seeing a contrast enhanced evaluation of the neck.
