Thoracolumbar AO Spine Injury Score

HIDE
PrevNext

0:01

In the clinical evaluation for thoracolumbar spine injuries,

0:06

you may encounter the AO score.

0:09

And I spent a lot of time trying to figure

0:11

out what does AO stand for?

0:14

Little did I know that it's actually stood for a German

0:17

words Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen

0:25

which is German for the working group for bone fusion in issues.

0:30

So you couldn't find this too easily in the English language

0:33

literature about what the AO score refers to.

0:36

But this is the German words that were used.

0:39

The AO score refers to the different categories of injury

0:44

that are listed, as well as the patient's neurologic status.

0:48

So type A would be compression fractures of different types.

0:53

Then you have the tension band injuries with a chance fracture.

0:57

Then you have translational injuries.

1:00

And finally,

1:01

you have the patient's neurologic status as far as

1:03

whether they have any injuries or complete spinal cord

1:06

transection or transverse myelitis symptoms, or the

1:10

patient's specific injuries. So, based on this scoring value,

1:14

the patient will be referred to for an AO spine score injury.

1:19

And the higher the number, obviously,

1:21

the worse the prognosis and the worse the injury.
