Fungal Sinusitis Summary

HIDE
PrevNext

0:01

We're talking about the emergency cases that

0:05

are life threatening in the head and neck,

0:09

and one of the ones that I spoke about was the invasive fungal

0:14

sinusitis. Fungal sinusitis is a very complex topic,

0:18

and we could probably do a mastery course just

0:20

on fungal infections throughout the body.

0:23

Suffice it to say that with regard to the sinusitis,

0:27

there are non invasive and there are invasive forms.

0:30

The non invasive forms tend to be associated with

0:33

allergic fungal rhinosinusitis and fungus balls,

0:37

and they really do not constitute emergent indications

0:42

for imaging or for intervention. And by enlarged,

0:45

these may be secondary to things like Rhizopus or Bipolaris.

0:50

The invasive fungal sinusitis are almost always

0:53

due to aspergillus and mucormycosis,

0:56

and they infect a different host.

0:59

These patients generally have chronic sinusitis and an allergic

1:04

atopy that is associated with the fungal polyps,

1:08

whereas these patients tend to be immunocompromised

1:12

and are more susceptible to aggressive infections.
