Exit of the Glossopharyngeal Nerve

0:00

Dr. P here talking about the glossopharyngeal

0:03

or 9th cranial nerve,

0:05

arising from the medulla oblongata.

0:07

Here's 9, 10, and 11 right here.

0:10

And the nerve passes anterolaterally.

0:12

So, let's go down.

0:14

Now, it courses right next to the flocculus,

0:17

part of the flocculo nodular lobe of the cerebellum.

0:20

Here's the flocculus.

0:21

So, you can see the close proximity

0:24

of the glossopharyngeal nerve to the flocculus.

0:26

Here's the glossopharyngeal nerve.

0:27

There's the flocculus right next to it.

0:29

And then we follow it into the region of the jugular fossa,

0:33

which is going to be right here.

0:34

Now, it's difficult to follow contiguously,

0:38

but you see part of it right there.

0:39

And again,

0:40

we're going to talk about nerves 9, 10, and 11 together.

0:43

They're all going into the jugular foramen through

0:46

the central part of the jugular foramen.

0:49

Not as easily seen on this T1-weighted image,

0:52

but it is seen, as it is on this T2-weighted

0:55

cisternographic image.

0:57

Now, as the nerve hits the jugular foramen,

1:00

I want to talk about what happens in here,

1:02

which is very difficult to see anatomically.

1:04

But you've got superior and inferior ganglia in the jugular foramen,

1:08

and they have their own sheath of dura mater.

1:11

The inferior ganglion sits on the inferior surface of the

1:15

petrous part of the temporal bone and is

1:18

related with a triangular depression into which

1:20

the aqueduct of the cochlea actually opens.

1:24

Let's have a look at that anatomic information on CT.

1:28

So on this accompanying CT image,

1:31

you see a triangular shaped space in the region of the

1:34

jugular fossa with the jugular tympanic spine.

1:37

And this is known as the petrosal fossula

1:41

and contains the inferior ganglion of nine.

1:44
