Glossopharyngeal Nerve – Cranial Nerve IX

0:00

Dr. P here with the glossopharyngeal nerve,

0:03

also known as the 9th cranial nerve.

0:06

It's a mixed nerve that carries afferent sensory

0:09

and efferent motor information.

0:11

Now, it exits the brainstem from the

0:14

sides of the upper medulla.

0:16

And you can see that we're not at the upper medulla,

0:18

we're at the level of the pons.

0:20

And the reason is, I want to give you a landmark.

0:22

Got the 7th and 8th nerve complex exiting anterolaterally.

0:27

In front of that, we also happen to have,

0:29

coincidentally, nerve six.

0:32

And now we go down.

0:33

And as we go down,

0:34

if you can count from seven and eight,

0:36

you're going to run into nerve number nine.

0:39

And there it is.

0:40

And with it, you have traveling some other nerves,

0:42

ten and eleven, right behind it

0:46

along the posterior aspect of the upper medulla.

0:50

Now, for you wine lovers out there,

0:53

and for you medical students and residents,

0:55

the glossopharyngeal nerve participates in taste,

0:59

along with the chorda tympani coming from the 7th nerve,

1:03

which travels with the lingual nerve,

1:05

which is part of the third division

1:07

of the trigeminal nerve.

1:09

So that gets the anterior two thirds

1:11

of the tongue for taste,

1:13

while the glossopharyngeal nerve gets

1:15

the posterior one third.

1:16

Now, the motor division of the glossopharyngeal nerve

1:18

is derived from the basal plate of the

1:21

embryonic medulla oblongata,

1:23

while the sensory division originates

1:25

from the cranial nerve crest.

1:27

Now, let's have a look again at the apparent

1:30

origin of the glossopharyngeal nerve.

1:32

If we tack a little cursor right here,

1:35

right there in the coronal projection,

1:37

you can see with a slightly upward course in this individual,

1:40

is the glossopharyngeal nerve,

1:42

right there, just to the right of the brainstem,

1:45

upper portion of a medulla.

1:46

And there it is,

1:47

coming right out of the medullary region,

1:50

the apparent origin of the glossopharyngeal

1:54

nerve, number nine.
