Trigeminal Nerve - V2 Division

0:00

Dr. P here talking to you about the second division of the

0:05

trigeminal nerve, also known as the maxillary nerve.

0:11

And here we've got maxillary,

0:13

and number two to delimit this nomenclature.

0:17

This nerve comes off the Gasserian or semilunar ganglion,

0:20

but runs in an anteroposterior direction through,

0:24

for you test-takers, the foramen rotundum,

0:27

which, by the way, runs parallel to the vidian canal,

0:31

although the maxillary nerve goes through the rotundum,

0:34

not the vidian canal.

0:36

Now, the main ganglion coming off this nerve which is the

0:40

most common nerve afflicted in tic douloureux

0:45

or trigeminal neuralgia,

0:46

whereas the ophthalmic is the least commonly affected.

0:50

The pterygopalatine ganglion is seen right here

0:54

coming off the maxillary. There's also supply,

0:57

sensory supply to the pterygopalatine nerve,

1:01

the zygomatic nerve, the infraorbital nerve,

1:04

the lacrimal communicating nerve,

1:06

zygomatic facial, and temporal nerves.

1:09

And we've already discussed the importance and role of

1:12

the pterygopalatine ganglion, which we said has both

1:16

sympathetic sensory and parasympathetic function.

1:20

Let's move on to the third division of the trigeminal nerve,

1:24

the mandibular division.

1:25

Dr. P out.
