
CASE HISTORY
Patient referred for MRI subsequent to unable to open mouth very wide noise and pain when moving jaws.

TECHNICAL FACTORS
Long- and short- axis fat- and water-weighted sequences were obtained.

CASE FINDINGS
Fluid in the right temporomandibular joint complex. Condylar head arthritis and remodeling. Mandibular fossa arthritis. The meniscus on the closed mouth view is small nodular and appears to be extruded medially. No excursion is present on the open mouth view consistent with right-sided closed lock.
Left meniscus is in the 12-o’clock position on the closed mouth view. Small amount of fluid within the joint space. On the open mouth view there is no excursion consistent with closed lock.

CASE CONCLUSION
Right temporomandibular arthritis and joint effusion with thickening and irregularity of the meniscus and partial meniscal extrusion. No excursion is demonstrated on open mouth views consistent with closed lock.
The left meniscus is in the 12-o’clock position on the closed mouth view. No excursion is demonstrated on open mouth consistent with closed lock.
