So an additional variant of acute appendicitis
0:03
is something called stump appendicitis.
0:06
So what that is, is a patient's
0:07
had appendicitis and they've had an
0:09
appendectomy, but occasionally a small
0:11
stump of the appendix gets left behind.
0:13
And if that unfortunately gets obstructed,
0:15
they can cause a new appendicitis.
0:18
So in this case, as you're following that
0:20
colon down, we get to the terminal ileum
0:22
right here, come down a little bit further.
0:25
And here we have a little stump of an appendix.
0:27
In this case, we don't have an
0:28
acute appendicitis, but you can
0:30
see this bright part right here.
0:32
In this case, it's not an appendicolith.
0:33
It's probably a little bit of the
0:34
suture after their appendectomy, but
0:36
the fat around is completely clean.
0:38
There's no inflammatory changes around here.
0:40
You don't see the fascial thickening
0:42
right here that would be reactive.
0:43
active from any sort of itis,
0:45
particularly an acute appendicitis.
0:48
So in this case, the patient just has a stump
0:50
of an appendix here, but they are certainly
0:52
at risk of developing acute appendicitis.
0:54
And if you saw inflammation in this area and
0:57
thickening and enhancement, you would call a
0:59
stump appendicitis, even though their surgical
1:02
history says they are post appendectomy.
