Welcome to our Acetabular Labral Tears
0:03
MRI video series included in the HIP.
0:08
And we're going to focus on the
0:10
Acetabular Labrum for a number of reasons.
0:14
It's incredibly interesting because
0:16
it's such a tiny object that creates
0:19
tremendous havoc in athletes, as we'll see.
0:21
It's a very debilitating injury.
0:24
What is an acetabular labral tear?
0:26
It's a small, either detachment or tear, within a
0:30
triangular fibrocartilaginous substance itself
0:35
that again produces disproportionate symptoms.
0:38
Who gets them?
0:39
Well, older people get them with
0:41
regular frequency, but they're often not
0:43
problematic, and they're oft asymptomatic
0:46
because of the lower level of activity.
0:49
But when even the smallest labral tear happens
0:51
in a high-performance athlete, for instance,
0:54
a ballet dancer or an American football player,
0:57
it can be catastrophic and career-ending.
1:00
And that's why it's such an interesting topic.
1:04
What makes it even more interesting is the
1:06
variations that exist within the labrum and
1:10
the fact that the labrum, with the smallest
1:14
tear, can produce massive symptomatology.
1:18
These variations will be covered in this
1:20
video series along with the evolution of
1:23
the labrum as we go from the younger age
1:26
where it's more triangular to an older
1:28
age where it's more irregular or blunted.
1:32
As you watch this video, I hope that you will
1:35
get a greater level of comfort for what's a tear
1:39
that's symptomatic, what's a tear that can be
1:42
ignored, what are the different types of tears.
1:46
And most importantly, what are the
1:48
variations that may simulate a tear,
1:52
for over-diagnosing a tear that isn't there
1:54
can be the greatest catastrophe of all.
