Mucocele

HIDE
PrevNext

0:01

So there are multiple different masses

0:02

that can occur in the appendix itself.

0:04

One of the most common that

0:05

you'll see is the mucocele.

0:08

And what happens here is the appendix

0:09

dilates and becomes distended with mucus.

0:11

And in this case, it's a sterile mucus,

0:13

not inflammatory or infected mucus.

0:16

And what you'll see in these

0:17

cases is the appendix usually

0:19

dilates more than one centimeter.

0:22

It often narrows towards the tip of

0:24

it, and the wall can variably calcify.

0:27

So in this image right here, you're

0:29

seeing this very dilated tubular.

0:31

A little bit of calcification within

0:33

the wall here and inside of it

0:36

as well, but very, very dilated.

0:38

I apologize for the quality of this image.

0:40

This was an outside exam

0:42

that got pushed into our system.

0:44

So it's a little bit pixelated, but it

0:46

shows you a nice and beautiful example.

0:48

Of a mucocele here and other things to note.

0:50

There's no inflammation around it.

0:52

This is not an acute appendicitis.

0:54

It is not a sequel cancer to speak

0:55

himself with the oral contrast on board.

0:58

You can see it's nice and thin-walled.

0:59

Here's your T I right here.

1:01

There's no lymphadenopathy.

1:02

You just have this dilated

1:04

fluid-filled appendix.
