Let's talk about the olfactory bulb.
0:03
We can see it on a coronal thin section image.
0:06
There it is, right there.
0:07
A bulbous group of paired gray structures lying just above,
0:13
lying just above the superior nasal concha and nasal cavity.
0:16
Do a little scrolling here.
0:18
As we go back, you can see they spread out a little bit,
0:20
become a little bit thinner as the optic tract.
0:23
We go forward,
0:24
they're a little bit more round
0:25
and bulbous and easy to see.
0:28
Now they are communicating with a group of glands
0:32
that sit in this mucosa right here.
0:35
And these glands, these organs of Schultz,
0:38
or receptors of Schultz are collectively known as
0:41
the olfactory gland. So it's not one single gland.
0:45
I'd like to draw a little bit.
0:47
Let's draw the bulb and the optic tract.
0:50
I'll use my favorite drawing color,
0:53
which is yellow because it's easy to see.
0:55
I'll make it a little bit bigger than it should be.
0:58
And as we come back a little bit, I'll color it over.
1:00
So this is fatter than it would normally be.
1:03
Right there is going to be the optic nerve.
1:06
There's the bulb right there.
1:08
I've got my pen right over it.
1:09
I'll put a little dot on it so you can see it right here.
1:12
When I take it away, you'll be able to see it.
1:13
And I'll put a little dot over the two olfactory bulbs.
1:17
Now, coming into the olfactory tract from the back,
1:23
just for the sake of completion right now is going to be a
1:25
lateral stria. Actually, I'll use a different color,
1:28
something a little easier to see.
1:29
Let's use red. So a lateral stria over here,
1:33
an intermediate stria, a medial stria.
1:35
And then you're also going to have a diagonal band that goes
1:39
over to the amygdala called the diagonal band of Broca.
1:42
And then you're also going to have another bifurcation here
1:45
that goes into the anterior commissure and crosses
1:48
the midline. So in total, there are five of them.
1:52
Let's go back to a sagittal drawing of the olfactory
1:58
bulb and tract. We'll go back to my yellow.
2:00
I'm going to draw right over it.
2:02
It's a very thin stripe under the gyrus rectus.
2:05
Then it has a little bulbous configuration.
2:07
There's your bulb right there.
2:08
And then it comes back.
2:09
And now I'm going to blow it up for you.
2:13
Pardon my drawing skills. And as you know,
2:16
there are a bunch of tracts coming into it from the back.
2:18
Five of them.
2:19
You've seen them in the axial projection.
2:22
And now let's pretend we've got some mucosa underneath.
2:25
A couple of words about the olfactory bulb.
2:28
The olfactory bulb is actually a gray matter mass.
2:32
It's an evagination of the telencephalon, as stated,
2:35
located between the gyrus rectus and the cribriform plate.
2:38
And it contains neurons known as mitral cells.
2:42
So now let's look at what happens.
2:44
Our tracts are coming forward into the bulb.
2:48
And when they get into the bulb,
2:52
we'll have three of them here.
2:54
They become mitral cells.
2:57
They pass right through the mitral cells and.
2:59
Cells blue. So the mitral cells are right here.
3:03
Then the next thing that happens is a synapse.
3:07
So we'll make the synapse something interesting,
3:09
like some type of weird magenta.
3:12
So now you have a synapse right there.
3:15
And then you have continuation with primary sensory axons
3:21
right into the glands of Schultz in the nasal mucosa.
3:25
So we'll draw that in maybe green.
3:28
So it'll perforate the cribriform plate,
3:31
go right into the nasal mucosa,
3:33
and it will pick up these receptors,
3:36
these glands of Schultz.
3:37
And we'll make those kind of a weird
3:39
looking purple so you can see them.
3:41
So that's more or less how things go for the olfactory bulb.
3:46
The dendrites continue in the olfactory tract,
3:50
which terminates in the region of the trigone.
3:53
So you've got dendrites right here.
3:55
You've got axons coming back that would
3:57
I could color them in blue,
3:58
but right at this locus now I'm going to take it away,
4:00
the olfactory trigone.
4:02
This shelf right here is the termination location for those
4:06
axons before they bifurcate into those five separate
4:11
divisions that I described medial, lateral, intermediate,
4:15
diagonal, bandaboka,
4:16
and the one going to the anterior commissure.
4:18
We'll talk about those in a separate vignette.
4:20
That's the anatomy of the olfactory bulb.
