Midline Cisterns and Spaces

0:00

Let's take a look at cisterns and spaces

0:02

on the sagittal thin section FLAIR image.

0:05

Let's start down low.

0:07

We've got the cisterna magna

0:09

at the level of the foramen magnum.

0:12

Anteriorly, the inferior premedullary cistern.

0:15

Here's our fourth ventricle with

0:17

the inferior midline opening,

0:18

the foramen of Magendie.

0:20

Just anterior to it is a little bump here,

0:23

the medullary clava and the obex as a landmark.

0:27

The vestigium of the fourth ventricle

0:29

is pointed posteriorly,

0:31

and its development and pointedness

0:33

should be pointed out.

0:35

Above the fourth ventricle continues as the aqueduct

0:39

of sylvius. Above the cerebellum,

0:43

the supra or superior cerebellar cistern,

0:46

the cistern of the vein of Galen

0:49

and the peripineal cistern.

0:52

Anteriorly, the interpeduncular cistern

0:55

through which the apparent exit of the third nerve

0:58

can be found with the pre-pontine cistern

1:01

off to the side will be the peripontine

1:04

and perimedullary cisterns.

1:06

And off to the side, you'll find the foramina of Luschka

1:09

at lateral recesses of the fourth.

1:11

We don't see them on the midline cut.

1:13

The third ventricle is a little bit squirrely.

1:16

It's got a few recesses.

1:17

Let's draw them in.

1:19

We've got a recess above the pineal gland

1:22

called a supra pineal recess.

1:25

A little nubbin that bumps right into the pineal

1:27

called the pineal recess of the third.

1:30

Then as we come forward,

1:31

we've got the supra infundibular recess right here.

1:35

And then we also have anterior to that,

1:37

the supraoptic recess in front of it.

1:40

The four recesses of the third ventricle.

1:44

And we've also got the suprasellar cistern and volume

1:48

averaged is the midline portion of the lateral ventricle.

1:51

Those are the major cisterns that you see on a

1:53

aagittal midline view.
