0:00

And our next topic is skin

0:02

changes and inflammation.

0:05

So patients presenting with redness of their skin

0:09

or skin thickening, um, we want to think about

0:12

things like infectious mastitis, granulomatous

0:15

mastitis and, um, inflammatory breast cancer.

0:21

So mastitis often occurs

0:24

postpartum or during lactation.

0:26

It occurs in women of childbearing age.

0:29

And often related to staph aureus or

0:32

streptococcus infections, usually has an acute

0:36

onset and the patient presents with pain and

0:39

a palpable lump as well as skin erythema.

0:43

They may have systemic symptoms such as

0:45

fever, chills, malaise, and myalgias.

0:49

And on ultrasound, we're going to see

0:50

edema, hyperechoic fat lobules, increased

0:54

vascularity, skin thickening, maybe an abscess.

0:57

And the treatment for this would be antibiotics,

1:00

aspiration, um, and drainage of

1:03

fluid collections if we find those.

1:07

There's also non-lactational mastitis,

1:10

which often occurs in young women.

1:13

The risk factors include smoking,

1:15

diabetes, and immunocompromised state.

1:19

Um, and this has more of a

1:20

subacute onset of days to a week.

1:24

and presents with periareolar

1:25

inflammation with or without an abscess.

1:28

And these patients often have systemic

1:31

symptoms of fever, malaise, and myalgias.
