Marfan’s Syndrome

HIDE
PrevNext

0:01

This was a patient who had known Marfan syndrome,

0:04

and I just wanted to show you one of the complications

0:06

that one can get with Marfan syndrome.

0:10

If we look at the right common carotid artery,

0:14

beginning down here in the mediastinum,

0:18

and we follow the right common carotid artery,

0:24

we come to the bifurcation here.

0:27

At the bifurcation of the right common carotid artery

0:31

into the external and internal carotid artery,

0:35

we note a linear area of abnormal density.

0:39

This is this little line right in the proximal

0:45

right internal carotid artery,

0:46

which should not be there.

0:49

We can follow that up.

0:51

So as we scroll upward,

0:52

we see that this line persists within the internal

0:57

carotid artery on the right side.

0:58

It goes and separates it into two chrysanthic areas,

1:03

and it persists even going up throughout into

1:09

the petrous internal carotid artery.

1:12

So throughout the cervical portion,

1:14

we have that little line.

1:15

That's an area of dissection within the blood vessel,

1:19

which is one of the complications of Marfan syndrome

1:23

and is an intrinsic carotid sheath pathology.
