The Cervical Sympathetic Chain

HIDE
PrevNext

0:01

This is a nice diagram showing the sympathetic nervous

0:05

system plexus as it relates to the carotid space.

0:09

You notice that in its entirety,

0:11

the sympathetic nervous system plexus is behind

0:14

the carotid artery, and for that matter,

0:16

it's behind the jugular vein.

0:18

And therefore schwannomas that occur along the

0:20

sympathetic nervous system plexus will push the

0:23

carotid artery and the jugular vein anteriorly.

0:26

You also notice that there are three different

0:28

areas where there are ganglia here.

0:31

These are the superior cervical ganglia,

0:34

the middle cervical ganglion, and the stellate ganglion

0:39

down here at the cervical thoracic junction.

0:42

And these ganglia may be the source of schwannomas,

0:46

but they also mark the pathway,

0:48

as previously described,

0:50

of the sympathetic nervous system plexus when

0:52

it may be involved in a Horner's syndrome.
