Medial Supporting Structures of the Knee

HIDE
PrevNext

0:01

Knee anatomy.

0:01

Collaterals, the MCL.

0:04

Let's start with the superficial layer,

0:07

layer number one, also known, seen here labeled C, as the crus layer.

0:13

And this might be a little bit confusing because this superficial layer,

0:18

one of the pitfalls, includes something called the deep fascia.

0:22

So don't get confused by that.

0:24

Another potential confusing pitfall is the middle layer.

0:27

It's called the superficial portion of the MCL.

0:30

But more on that at another time.

0:33

Let's look in the axial projection.

0:35

So this would be anterior, this would be posterior.

0:38

This is medial, this is lateral.

0:41

Here is layer number one.

0:44

It is formed by the deep fascia.

0:47

And that deep fascia may receive some fibers from the patella retinaculum.

0:52

Again, this is also called the crus or crural fascia.

0:56

Immediately underneath it is a more

0:58

condensed, thicker structure, which, in part, represents the medial

1:02

patellofemoral ligament, a patellar stabilizer.

1:05

And if you follow that back, it will eventually become the superficial

1:11

middle layer or the superficial MCL, or middle layer of the MCL, or layer number

1:17

two, what you might have called the tibial collateral ligament.

1:20

So these two are contiguous and these two are contiguous.

1:25

This one becoming layer number one, sitting on top of layer number two.

1:31

So layer number one,

1:33

the most superficial aspect of the MCL, which includes some retinacular fibers

1:38

and something called the deep fascia, also known by the synonym as the crus layer

1:44

or superficial crus layer of the MCL.
